The new Olight OSIGHT just launched, and I had the pleasure of seeing the OSIGHT firsthand thanks to Olight sending me one for evaluation. When I heard that Olight was entering the red dot market I was wondering what is it that would set them apart from the abundance of red dots on the market. What could Olight possibly come up with? Well, I have to say that what Olight has come up with has never been done before and is packed with some amazing features, especially for a red dot optic with a sub $200.00 price tag.
The Unboxing:
The OSIGHT is packaged just like their flashlights with a high-quality box, foam inserts and individual packaging for the added components. When I opened the box, I was blown away with the OSIGHT. The construction and feel of the OSIGHT was that of a very high quality and well manufactured product. The construction of the OSIGHT is made from Aluminum 7075-T6 which will withstand your firearm’s recoil, frequent drops and bumps. I can contest that the OSIGHT survived a 4-foot drop onto concrete with only very minor scuffs. The OSIGHT comes in weighing in at 60g / 2.12oz which includes the battery. This weight makes it more suitable for full-sized pistols or shotguns. The optic is IPX6 rated and has a working temperature range of -20°C ~ 60°C. The overall size is (L)1.77*(W)1.18*(H)1.29in which puts it into the full-sized class of red dots. This larger size gives you an amazing field of view and makes it much easier to acquire the target for repeated firing.
The installation was very simple and easy using the included tool and screws. I do like to torque my screws down to 10-15 in/lbs. so the tool was great to start the process and I just had to finish up using my torque limiter. One warning: make sure the provided screws will protrude far enough into your slide or mounting plate. Olight did a great job providing 4 sets of different threaded screws but for my Canik Rival-S there was not enough length on the provided screws to secure the sight. I was able to find additional #6-32-1/2 inch screws at my local hardware store which allowed me to attach the sight safely. This is just a general safety warning when mounting any red dot site to your firearm.
The rubber buttons are very tactile and made of a high-grade rubber and are easy to find and manipulate when needed. Located on the left side of the optic the buttons function as power buttons, brightness adjustments mode switching (Manual, lock-out, and auto sensing), motion sensor (on/off) and includes a battery indicator between the two buttons.
The glass is extremely clear and appears to have a multi-layered coating which gives you a very clear view of your target. The overall glass dimensions is 0.85in high by 0.95in wide which gives a wide field of view.
The red dot emitter has 12 levels of brightness of which 2 of the lowest settings are night vision compatible. The 3 MOA reticle is extremely clear and at the highest brightness is more than adequate in the brightest outdoor settings. Even on the brightest setting the red dot maintains a clear focused dot with minimal staring effect. The 3 MOA dot is a very nice compromise allowing you to maintain accuracy at longer distances but giving you the ability to acquire your targets faster. I hope at some point the OSIGHT will evolve to having a multi-reticle system with a 3 MOA dot and a 26 MOA ring to give shooters the ability to switch reticle modes based on their shooting conditions.
The elevation and windage adjustments are extremely tactile letting you feel the 1 MOA adjustment when zeroing in the sight. Olight even provided a tool to make those adjustments. My sight only required 2 clicks up and 3 to the left and it was spot on at 10 yards.
👉Now let’s talk about some of the high-end features that separate itself from the other red dot sights on the market.
Auto Brightness Mode
The OSIGHT comes with auto-brightness sensor which will automatically change the sight’s brightness according to the ambient light. If the light sensor detects a low light level, it will turn the brightness down, and it will increase it when the ambient light is bright. Not only will this option make the reticle clean and crisp at all times, but it will also increase the battery’s longevity.
Manual Brightness Mode
If the automatic brightness is not your thing you have the option to turn off the auto brightness and manually set the brightness to one of the 12 brightness levels using the side buttons.
Lockout Mode
In lockout mode you can manually set your desired brightness level and the brightness setting will remain the same even if the adjustment buttons are accidently pressed.
Motion Sensor
This feature will automatically turn on the optic and turn off the optic after a predetermined period. This feature is effective at prolonging the battery’s life. The sensor is very sensitive and turns on instantaneously.
Battery Indicator
The OSIGHT comes with a battery indicator that sits between the + and – buttons. When any button is pressed the indicator will light indicate the remaining battery levels by showing green (≥50%), yellow (50%-20%), red (20%-10%), and blinking red (<10%).
The Battery & Charging Cover
This brings us to what sets the OSIGHT apart from any other red dot sight on the market. The OSIGHT has a revolutionary rechargeable internal 170mAh 3.87v battery. This internal rechargeable battery gives the optic a runtime of approximately 50,000 hours on brightness setting 3. This runtime is the same standard runtime as other optics, but the OSIGHT has the ability to be recharged using its revolutionary charging cover. This convenient USB-C Charging cover can charge the optic 3 times before the charging cover itself needs to be recharged. The charging cover is simply placed over the OSIGHT optic, and it magnetically attaches itself to the optic via the charging pad located on top of the sight. The charging cover takes ~3hrs to fully charge (requiring a 5V/2A (10W) power sources (not included). The charging cover has the new power indicator that shows the actual battery level using a series of line markers and numerical percentages 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% arranged in a clock like pattern. There will be some people that will say it’s better to have a replaceable coin battery that they can just throw in if their existing battery goes dead. Honestly, if you wait to replace your battery when it goes dead you have waited too long. I replace my coin batteries every 6-months whether they need to be replaced or not, so you are not replacing the battery when you need it most. The OSIGHT optic gives you a clear indication of the battery level and the internal battery enables it to be recharged as needed just by slipping the charging cover over the optic.
Warranty
The OSIGHT is covered by a lifetime warranty in Australia, China, France, Germany, and
the USA. If you have ever owned a product from Olight then you know that the warranty and customer service is one of the best in the industry.
Summary
So, my final thoughts… Olight has hit this one out of the park!! I have purchased many optics over the years, and I will say for the number of features that the OSIGHT comes with and the manufactured quality you would easily pay $250-$450. The OSIGHT for $199.00 MSRP is a great price, especially when you consider the game changing charging cover. I ran 500 rounds through my Canik Rival-S and the OSIGHT held zero without any issues. I drop tested it from 4 feet on concrete and it survived with only some slight scuffs on the impact edges. The optic window is huge and super clear glass and works well with a full-sized firearm. The emitter has 12 brightness settings and is super clear as well. I would consider the Olight OSIGHT a major competitor to the Trijicon RMR, Holosun 407C, 507C and 508T, Vortex Venom, Cyelee Wolf Pro and the Sig Saur Romeo1 especially at the <$200 price point. If there were any improvements that I would make, it would be to make an OSIGHT version with a multi-reticle like a 3 MOA dot with a 20-26 MOA ring as well as a smaller version which would be better for EDC.
I will be purchasing a few more of these for my other firearms in the very near future. I hope this information helps you out when looking for a quality optic packed full of features at a reasonable price.
